Description
In this book, I describe my trips and experiences in three states of Africa: Egypt, the Congo and Mauritius.
I begin with my wonderful trip to Egypt. Our first city was the enchanting Luxor, on the site of the ancient city of Thebes. We visited the magnificent Temples of Luxor and Karnak on the east bank of the Nile, the city of the living, and on the west bank the famous necropolis of ancient Thebes and of course the tomb of Tutankhamun. On a cruise ship we went further south to Edfu and Kom Ombo, where the dynasty of the Ptolemies left significant temples that have been preserved to this day. Our cruise ended at Aswan. Here, in the waters of the Nile, we visited Elephantine Island, a significant commercial center on the borders of Egypt and Nubia in antiquity, and the holy island of Philae with its Temple of the goddess Isis. We flew to Cairo, the largest capital of the Arab world. The Museum, the three Pyramids and the Sphinx add even more on top to our already rich voyage.
And finally we end our voyage with a day-trip to Alexandria, the city founded by Alexander the Great, which was the capital of Egypt for more than 1000 years. Today it is the largest port in Egypt and the second largest city after Cairo.
After Egypt, I describe my time in the Congo, as a teacher at the Greek community school. Most experiences included within, such as the school, national and religious celebrations, going to the church, celebrating name days, have a very Greek color. Moreover, I discuss about the difficult living conditions I faced and the wild physical beauty I witnessed. Going on excursions in the savanna was an unforgettable experience.
Then, I refer to the beautiful island of Mauritius. We swam in the clear blue waters of the south Indian Ocean and sun-bathed on its white beaches. We talked to the calm, friendly inhabitants and walked around shops that sell wooden models of 18th-century ships. We watched the locals dance the Sega dance and even tried to do it ourselves. Yes, Mauritius offers rest, calm, entertainment and luxury, i.e. holidays that satisfy every visitor.
Trips are unique experiences that accompany you throughout your entire life, and their memory fills you with joy and optimism. This joy and optimism I decided to share with my friends and readers by writing this book. I hope that the book will keep you company, will calm you and help you relax.
